The Vee train keeps on rolling
Oct 6, 2012 / 9:27 am
The Penticton Vees continue to look like they picked up right where they left off last year.
After dominating the BCHL for the entire 2011-12 season, the Vees once again appear to be the class of the league this year.
Mike Rebry scored twice for the second straight game and Penticton rode a strong special teams performance to a 4-2 win over the Vernon Vipers Friday.
The win is the Vees fifth in a row and sixth in their last seven games.
Their 8-1-0 mark is the league's best.
Rebry scored on the power-play and short-handed in the win. He also wasn’t the only Vee to score a pair, as Wade Murphy notched his fourth and fifth goals on the season.
Vernon opened the scoring when Adam Tambellini broke in and slid a back-hand past Chad Katunar at 15:20.
Penticton drew even on Rebry's power play marker as he put home a rebound under Austin Smith at 19:17.
Wade Murphy put the Vees ahead in the second period with his first on the night. Murphy grabbed the puck at the Vipers blue-line and worked his way to the top of the right-circle; his shot zipped over the blocker of Smith at 4:23.
After Rebry made it 3-1 on Rebry's second, the Vipers made it a one-goal game when Aaron Hadley shoveled in a loose puck at 11:42.
However, the Vees restored their two goal lead on a late power-play in the period. Murphy scored his second of the game on a rebound at the side of the Vipers net at 18:20, sealing the win.
The Vees conclude their home stand Saturday night when the Trail Smoke Eaters come to Penticton. Game time 5:00 p.m., at the South Okanagan events Centre.
