The Portland Winterhawks defeated the Kelowna Rockets 1-0 on Friday night at the Rose Garden, in Portland, Oregon.

Cam Lanigan stopped 31 shots to record the shut-out and the Hawks scored the game's only goal midway through the third period for the win.

Derrick Pouliot scored on the power play at 9:50 of the third, the only goal to get past Rockets' netminder Jordon Cooke, who faced 35 shots.

The Rockets were 0-for-6 on the power play while Portland went 1-for-8.

The two teams will meet again Saturday in Portland.

The Rockets return to Kelowna October 3 when they host the Vancouver Giants.
