When it comes to decriminalizing pot, delegates attending the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) convention in Victoria and Castanet readers appear to be on the same page.

A poll on Castanet Tuesday asked readers if UBCM delegates should endorse a recommendation to decriminalize marijuana.

Nearly 78 per cent of more than 2,000 respondents to the poll said yes.

Wednesday in Victoria, UBCM delegates including mayors and councillors from communities across the province indeed voted in favour of the resolution.

The resolution asked "the appropriate government to decriminalize marijuana and research the regulation and taxation of marijuana."

It further states efforts to deal with pot through the police and court system as a failed policy.

Former BC Attorney General, Geoff Plant and others say decriminalizing marijuana will help fight organized crime gangs who invade communities and stage lethal battles to control BC's multi-billion-dollar marijuana market.

The exact breakdown of the vote was not disclosed.
