Need for speed now a need for a car

A Calgary man who allegedly raced down one of the busiest highways in Alberta at more than 200 kilometres an hour is facing a charge of criminal dangerous driving.

RCMP say early Sunday morning a radar unit tracked two vehicles heading south side-by-side at 180 km/h on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway near Innisfail, north of Calgary.

An Alberta sheriff set up further south later clocked the pair doing 214 km/h.

Both vehicles were still allegedly racing when police located them a few kilometres south of Innisfail, but the 21-year-old driver of one of the speeding autos stopped when police turned on their emergency lights.

The would-be racer will be in court next month.

Police also seized his vehicle. They are still looking for the second auto.
