Heat fit to be tied in Burnaby
Sep 16, 2012 / 10:04 am
UBC Okanagan Heat women's soccer team improved to 1-1-1 after playing to a 2-2 tie against the Langara Falcons in Burnaby on Saturday.
"I am pleased with the way we played today,” says Head coach Claire Paterson.
“We definitely played good enough to win, but we were unlucky in the final third and it seemed to be the other story for Langara. The score was not indicative of our performance.”
The Heat out shot the Falcons 24 to four and created numerous chances throughout the game including ringing one off the crossbar and the post late in the second half.
Langara opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, before Vernon's Kirsten Dodds tied the game at one with a header 11 minutes later.
Despite the Heat's territorial domination in the second half, Langara re-took the lead in the 65th minute.
That lead stood up until Marissa Klees, a 3rd year midfielder from Bellingham, Washington scored the equalizer on a well-placed free kick with just minutes to play.
The Heat play Quest University Sunday at 12 p.m. in Squamish before returning home.
The UBCO men’s team also earned a point against Langara Saturday, fighting back in the second half to come away with a 1-1 draw in their first road game of the season.
“We played fairly well,” says captain and fifth year defender Dustin Luck of Kelowna.
“We were down 1-0 and showed some fight by coming back in the second half. Overall it was a decent performance.”
The Falcons were able to get the jump on the Heat early in the second when Langara’s Valery Romanchik broke the scoreless game, beating Heat keeper Logan Ellis.
Fifth year forward Zach Donaldson-Hall, from Kamloops, broke free in the 75th minute and netted his first of the season to tie the game at one.
The Heat are now 0-1-2 and will try for their first win of the season on Sunday when they visit the Quest University Kermodes. Sunday’s game will kick off at 2 p.m., following the women's match.
