Man arrested for attempted murder

Police are currently investigating an attempted murder in Kelowna.

A Kelowna woman was taken to hospital and remains in critical condition after she was struck with a hammer, Thursday night.

Unconfirmed reports say it was a family and that the son was taken into custody for the assault on his mother.

RCMP responded to the disturbance on Mission Springs Drive just after 9:00 p.m.

Emergency crews rushed the woman to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.

A 24-year-old Kelowna man was arrested at the scene and is currently in police custody.

Residents living nearby in the upscale neighbourhood report seeing a large disturbance when emergency officials arrived.

"I noticed a couple of police cars come in rather quickly, then a couple more." says Corrie Lang. "We watched from our upstairs window and saw someone come out on a stretcher, and knew it was pretty serious."

As a parent, Lang says the commotion was concerning. "We have two young kids and our neighbours have three, so it's always concerning when something like this happens."

Another neighbour, who wishes to remain anonymous, says he didn't know the woman personally, and that her son played the drums but admitted he didn't see him too often. He added  that her husband was friendly, as were many in the neighbourhood, and that they often exchanged waves.

"When we moved in there were about 30 people who came by and welcomed us. It's surprising when something like this happens."

The RCMP continued to investigate Friday afternoon, but officials at the scene were tight-lipped.
