Sun come up short against Rebels
Sep 9, 2012 / 10:20 am
The Okanagan Sun fell to 1-4, their worst start in team history, after a 27-24 defeat at the hands of the Westshore Rebels in BCFC action Saturday night at the Apple Bowl.
The game was delayed for 90 minutes after the Rebels team bus broke down on the Coquihalla Highway, pushing back the opening kick-off to 8:30.
The Sun would open the scoring after a blocked punt set them up on the Westshore one yard line, but the touchdown would produce the only Sun lead of the night.
The highlight of the night for the Sun came in the second quarter when Quarterback Cam Bedore connected with Slotback Bobby Davis for a 94 yard touchdown pass to even the score at 14.
However, the Rebels responded with a scoring drive of their own and carried a 21-14 lead into half time.
Although the scoring subsided in the second half, Westshore got a strong performance from BCFC leading rusher Greg Morris, especially in the dying moments of the game.
The Sun were trailing by three after missing on a 32 yard field goal attempt with under seven minutes to go, and powered by Morris's running, the Rebels were able to control the game and run out the clock.
It won't get any easier for the Sun as they prepare to host the defending champion Vancouver Island Raiders at the Apple Bowl next Saturday, September 15, starting at 1:00 p.m.
Although the Sun narrowly missed pulling off an upset win in Nanaimo earlier this season, the Raiders will come into the Apple Bowl undefeated and tied for first place with the Langley Rams.
The Sun have now lost three in a row.
