A man who murdered his estranged wife and her parents in BC 17 years ago has died in a federal prison in Mission.

The Corrections Service says 49-year-old Darcy Richard Bertrand was found unresponsive in his cell at Mission Institution on Tuesday and was later pronounced dead in hospital.

Bertrand was serving an indeterminate sentence after being convicted of three counts of second-degree murder.

Bertrand fatally stabbed 63-year-old Henry Roufosse and his 60-year-old wife Celine, as they left a church in Coquitlam on Thanksgiving Day in 1995.

He then went to the home of his estranged wife, 29-year-old Annette Roufosse, and killed her.

Bertrand's cause of death has not yet been determined, and the Corrections Service says the coroner has been notified.
