The Saanich Police Department is currently investigating circumstances surrounding the death of a man in the Penticton RCMP cell block.

Steven Joseph Scott, 30, of Penticton was arrested on Aug. 9 as a result of a disturbance complaint and refusal to leave a local residence.

He was subsequently remanded for a court appearance the next day.

Prior to the appearance he was found unresponsive in his cell and pronounced dead by BC Ambulance Service soon after.

In keeping with RCMP policy, an independent investigation was requested. The BC Coroners Service has also been engaged.

Back in May, the Delta Police Department was asked to do an investigation following a shooting incident in Princeton, where a man was found dead in his vehicle after a police chase.
