Update: Methane fumes kill dog
Aug 6, 2012 / 4:46 pm
Update: Tuesday, August 7: Fire Department officials say a Kelowna farmer is lucky to be alive after he was found unconscious in a manure field on the Marshall Feedlot property Monday.
Platoon Captain, Dale Calhoun says the man was overcome by methane gas while attempting to perform CPR on his dog who had also collapsed.
Along with the methane, Calhoun says there were also readings of H2S (hydrogen sulfide) in the ground as well.
"I would say he was very, very lucky," says Calhoun.
It just takes one or two gulps of the stuff (hydrogen sulfide).
Calhoun says the man's brother rescued the man from the manure field and took him to the house.
He says if the brother had attempted to revive him in the field, he could have been overcome by the gas as well.
According to his brother, the victim of the incident is back home and working.
He called it a one-in-a-million occurance.
WorkSafeBC will be investigating the incident.

A dog died and three people were taken to hospital after being exposed to toxic fumes at the Marshall Feedlot Monday morning.
The Kelowna Fire Department’s engine 3 and Hazmat unit along with an Ellison Fire Department engine responded to the incident on Old Vernon Road just before 9 a.m.
The dog apparently died first, and a man was overcome by the fumes when he got off his tractor to assist. Two other family members were also exposed when they tried to help, said Lt. Geoff Ross with the Ellison Fire Department.
The Hazmat unit came up with a minimal amount of the fumes after doing a scan of the area.
The three people were subsequently hospitalized.
