Letters to the editor

Warning to would be renters

To the editor:

I am not sure if I am the only person out there coming across these but I want people to know.

My boyfriend and I are currently searching for a Rental Suite for us and our lovable dog.  We came across one that was almost too good to be true.  After emailing the sender, a few odd feelings started to arise in me, my boyfriend said I was looking too much into it.

One, He wanted a money transfer through a Western Union branch and the money would be transferred to his wife in Spain? Just strange.

Two, I am not a spelling or grammar freak, but there was just something so off about the spelling that I couldn't help but feel leery.

Three, we drove by the home and there were cars galore outside when the home owner was supposed to be off in Africa.

Four, the family name and the man who we were apparently talking to checked out and there is a business man in Kelowna who owns a plumbing company.

Now the company vehicle was parked outside the house, which connects names and ties them all together.

Five, we called the family home and the "landlord" we had been talking to over email, answered the phone, when he was supposed to be in Spain for a 3 day conference.

Six, he took the keys to Africa with him, and while he was in Spain he was going to call his secretary in Africa and get him to mail off the keys to us.

Then he would send us a FedEx confirmation number which would allow us to track the package which contained our lease agreement, keys, contact information and so on.

Maybe this person was really the landlord of the house, but it just seemed really odd to me. I wanted people to know that they should really, really look into the house and from experience, never hand over any money unless you've actually seen the suite yourself.
