Officals keep an eye on Mission Creek
Jul 3, 2012 / 1:28 pm
With thundershowers forecasted for Tuesday in the Central Okanagan the BC River Forecast Centre has issued a High Streamflow Advisory for Mission Creek.
According to Regional Emergency Program Coordinator, Jason Brolund, heavy rains could once again result in minor flooding in low lying areas and rapid rises in creek levels and flows.
"Local crews continue to monitor the status of Mission Creek and other area creeks in light of the isolated thundershowers."
Property in the 11,200 block of Highway 33 near the Three Forks Bridge crossing of Mission Creek is also begin watched.
Brolund says two Mission Creek Greenway underpasses at the Casorso Road Bridge and the Gordon Drive Bridge will remain closed as does a low lying section of the Mission Creek Greenway between the Cedar Bridge (second bridge) and Smoothing Stone Bridge (third bridge) along Phase 2 of the recreational trail.
"The Central Okanagan Regional Emergency Program continues to encourage all property owners in low lying areas near creeks and streams to protect their properties from potential flooding. "
Information on flood preparedness including a recommended method for sandbag diking is available on the Regional Emergency Operation Centre website and the Emergency Management BC website.
Anyone noticing a potential problem or flooding concern in the Central Okanagan is asked to call the Regional Fire Dispatch at: 250-469-8577. Sandbags are available at local fire halls for any property owner facing imminent danger from flooding.
Boaters are also warned to keep their speeds and wakes down to prevent possible shore erosion, as well as watch for floating debris in area lakeside to the continued run off.
In the event of an emergency and activation of the Central Okanagan Emergency Operation Centre (EOC), the latest information will be available online at the new EOC Public Information website.
