Andy Griffith in 1987 at the People's Choice Awards

American actor Andy Griffith died Tuesday at his home in Dare County, North Carolina.

He was 86 years old.

The legendary actor, director and gospel singer was best known for his television roles as the lead character in "Matlock" and on "The Andy Griffith Show," in which he played a small town sheriff.

Griffith's death was confirmed by a local television station thatcited Bill Friday, a former president of the University of North Carolina who is a close friend to Griffith.
