Want to have a barbeque on the beach?

The City of Kelowna says it's now okay to do just that.

A change to the city's Parks and Public Spaces Bylaw now makes it legal to fire up a small, portable barbeque in a city park or on the beach.

Previously, barbeques were prohibited except during special events, however, Park Manager Ian Wilson says they are now allowed as long as it is gas powered and isn't causing any kind of a fire danger. 

"This was cleared through the fire department," says Wilson.

Allowing barbeques on beaches is one of highlights to the bylaw which underwent a complete re-write.

While most of the fines contained within the bylaw remain within the $100 range, Wilson says two have undergone significant change.

"Making a fire in a park -- previously... a $50 fine. The fire department recommended we bring that in line with provincial legislation to $345," says Wilson.

"Roast The second one is conducting an event without a permit. It was found the old fine was just too low so that is now going up to $500."
