Letters to the editor

Who gets Diamond Jubilee medals?

To the editor:

I am truly honoured that we have the Queens Representative, the Lt. Governor of BC, attending our small community's Westside Daze and serving as Parade Marshal, it truly is a great honour to this community of Westbank to have him present.

There is just one small problem bothers me and I sincerely hope that I am wrong in worrying about this and that problem is the presenting of the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medals.

I sincerely hope that we are not going to have a long line up of past and present politicians receive these special medals when there are real heroes in this community who truly deserve this award more than self serving politicians.

One person that I feel really deserves this medal is Bob Maxwell of Peachland, who served his country in the second world war as a gunner on Merchant Navy ships on the Atlantic Convoys where the German “U Boat Wolf Packs” killed many thousands of Canadian Merchant Seamen.

Then after the war, he fought for Canadian Merchant Seaman to be given the same rights and benefits as members of our armed forces.

He did this with no help or assistance from Provincial or Federal Governments and still fights today for these same rights for Canadian Merchant Seamen.

This is the kind of person who should be honoured with this medal.
