Live music in the vines

One of Kelowna’s classic summer things to do is to attend a vineyard concert at one of the spectacular winery venues around town. There’s just something about sitting by a vineyard as the sun is setting with a glass of wine, swaying to the music and liveliness of the atmosphere. So every year I gather information on wineries putting on live music concerts so that I can fill my calendar with fun opportunities. Here are a few that you can put on your calendar for this year.

Mission Hill Family Estate still has tickets available for the great jazzman Chris Botti (trumpet) who is set to play at the winery’s amphitheatre on June 24. Their summer concert lineup includes Lyle Lovett on July 12 and Chris Isaak on July 27! Big names that many only get to see in an indoor setting, let alone amid the architectural splendor of Mission Hill with views over Okanagan Lake and the beautiful Okanagan Mountain Park across the water. Check out the Westside Wine Trail while you’re over there!

CedarCreek is doing a Sunset Concert Series again this year. They arrange elegant white chairs theatre-style on the grassy area in their rose garden and under their event pergola, making for an intimate setting where guests might come as strangers but leave as buddies. The band plays on the lake-side of the rose garden, under the domed ceiling of the half-barrel. This year the concert series includes the award-winning music of Andrew Allen on July 19; then on August 2 Canadian songstress Chantal Kreviazuk who has become a household name all over the world. The series isn’t named “Sunset Concerts” for no reason: the vantage point that you have from your perch at CedarCreek during these concerts is absolutely ideal for watching the sun go down, and it is truly a magical Lakeshore Wine Route experience.

Over at The Vibrant Vine along the Fab Five of East Kelowna trail, you can enjoy live music every Saturday from 2 pm to 5 pm throughout the summer. Performers are all well-recognized local talent with big followings in Kelowna, so the concerts are bound to be tons of fun! Artists such as Anna Jacszyn, Major Mambo, David Myers, Summer Ice, and The Cappers will all entertain eager audiences at the winery’s picnic area. Incidentally, this winery is also presenting The Two Gentlemen of Verona this year in partnership with Shakespeare Kelowna. But we’re on the music beat at the moment, so more on that another time.

These are just some examples of the great music to be enjoyed among our vines in Kelowna this season. It is an experience that says “summer!” all over it – so pick your artist and your venue, and prepare to be blown away. Cheers!
