River levels expected to rise

The Okanagan has been placed on a high streamflow advisory.

The BC River Forecast Centre issued the alert Thursday for small and medium-sized rivers in the South Interior.

Warmer weather earlier in the week has turned accumulating snow in mountain snowpacks into melting snow.  According to the BC River Forecast Centre, snow melt rates has led to rising trends in most rivers through the region.

A strong high pressure ridge is forecast to develop across the province over the coming days and remain until the early part of next week. Environment Canada is forecasting temperatures in the mind-to upper 20s Saturday through Tuesday across the Okanagan.

The BC River Forecast Centre expects river levels to rise in response to rapid snowmelt over this period.

The rising trend is expected to least through the weekend and into next week with peak river levels on small to medium-sized rivers expected to be reached on Monday or Tuesday.

Other areas also placed on advisory include:

  • West Kootenay and East Kootenay
  • Columbia
  • Boundary
  • Similkameen
  • South Thompson tributaries
