Spring activities for the family
May 14, 2012 / 5:00 am
There’s something uplifting about the month of May, especially since we’ve enjoyed some wonderful spring weather lately, the sunshine is warm on the breeze, and our trees are festooned with blossoms. What’s not to like? Let’s look at the fun there is to be had in Kelowna in the coming weeks.
One favourite Kelowna activity is the Kelowna Farmers’ & Crafters’ Market, corner of Dilworth and Springfield. The market is in full force in May on Saturdays and Wednesday from 8 AM to 1 PM. Our Kelowna Farmers’ Market is also the province’s biggest, not to mention one of the longest running seasons for an outdoor farmers market in BC.
Kelowna’s Cultural District is another great spot to spend a few hours over the weekend. This 6-block area of the downtown, stretching from Queensway to Clement between Water and Ellis Streets, is a wealth of interesting things to see and do. For instance, the Kelowna Art Gallery offers Sunday afternoon art sessions for families, called “Family Sundays”. These go from 1 PM to 4 PM pm every Sunday and are just $4 per person. The next Family Sunday will feature a workshop on Kite Making in celebration of Asian Heritage Month.
Next door at the Rotary Centre for the Arts, Thursday evening’s are bustling. The Rotary Centre for the Arts is continuing its “Live After 5” jazz jams every Thursday from 5 PM to7 PM. Appropriate for all age groups, the program showcases local talent and provides the base instruments of drums, bass, and keyboard for the session. Along with the entertainment, browse the art in the Galleria or Artist Studios. This event is open to everyone, if you're an artist, performer or simply interested in arts and entertainment - and get this, it’s FREE!
For information on these activities and other local happenings, you can drop by the Kelowna Visitor Centre at 544 Harvey Ave. (corner of Ellis) and speak with a Visitor Counselor, or call us at (250) 861-1515. We wish you happy spring, and hope that you enjoy the month of May!
