2 dead in bus crash near Montreal

Two people died from their injuries after a charter bus went off the road Saturday northeast of Montreal.

Quebec provincial police spokesman Sgt. Claude Denis said the bus was carrying mostly elderly passengers and more than 20 other people were injured in the accident.

Denis said it appears the bus missed a turn on a slippery road and flipped onto its side, slamming into a power line.

"Our specialists are still trying to understand what happened exactly," he said.

No other vehicle was involved in the crash.

There were 57 passengers on board the bus, operated by Autocars La Chaudiere, headed from Thetford Mines to the United States.

The accident happened around 8 a.m. between Plessisville and St. Ferdinand on Route 165, about 200 kilometres northeast of Montreal.

Injured passengers were taken to hospitals in Victoriaville and Thetford Mines.
