Local comedy show thriving

When Bluelines Sports Bar and Comedy Club closed its doors in early 2010, a new show was there to fill the void for comedy fans in Kelowna.

On February 3rd 2010, Train Wreck Comedy burst onto the scene and quickly became the little show that could!

Every Wednesday night at 9pm, O’Flannigan’s Pub downtown became the place to be for both comedy fans and aspiring comedians in Kelowna.

Train Wreck Comedy started as just an open mic show, and with a name like “Train Wreck” the expectations were not high.  As few as five local comedians would perform each week to an audience that was not much larger; however, as word of the new Train Wreck Comedy Show finally began to spread the result was incredible.

Wednesday February 1st is not only the event’s 2-year anniversary, but also the 100th Train Wreck show!

"Everyone has an opinion about the world, and Train Wreck comedy nights are where we all get to share them!" says Rob Baldson, founder of Train Wreck Comedy.

Train Wreck Comedy had established itself as the new home of stand-up comedy in Kelowna.  The number of performers more than doubled over the year and Train Wreck Comedy even brought in Canadian comedy legend Mike MacDonald.

On February 2nd, 2011 Train Wreck Comedy celebrated its first birthday and also celebrated its first full house.  In year two this became a common occurrence as both Train Wreck Comedy and its audience continued to grow.

In its second year Train Wreck Comedy’s growth was obvious with the introduction of professional features on the final Wednesday of each month, a new sponsor in local radio station Power 104 and the launch of its new website, http://www.trainwreckcomedy.com

Clearly one show was no longer enough, so another was added every Thursday night at Dave’s Sports Bar in Rutland.

Train Wreck Comedy also gave back to the community that supported it over its first couple years with a Holiday Showcase at the end of December that raised more than $450 and 120 pounds of food for the Kelowna Food Bank.

Now with more than 15 local comedians, an informative website and two great locations, Train Wreck Comedy is entering its third year in Kelowna and continues to grow.

Beginning on January 25th, Wednesday nights will no longer be an open mic format. Instead, the shows will now feature only the strongest local comedians on a rotating schedule, special guests, theme nights and more professional features - all for only $5 each week.

Thursday will remain as an open mic show for the time being - and will be free every week - and professional feature nights will cost ONLY $5.

“You can’t beat the price tag for these shows,“ says Rob Baldson. “If you were to go to a professional comedy show in Vancouver or Toronto you would be paying $15-$20, some pro-am shows in the city can cost as much as $10.  It’s a steal to get such great comedy in Kelowna for only $5 or less!”

Train Wreck Comedy is excited for its third year in Kelowna and wants to thank everyone for their support over the last couple of years.  Keep laughing and we will see you soon on a Wednesday or Thursday night!
