Ashnola wildfire

Fire crews are making good headway on a 1.5 hectare wildfire near Ashnola. The fire was reported around 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Fire Information Officer Kevin Skrepnek says, "One airtanker from Abbotsford, a helicopter from Kelowna and ground crews from Penticton and Princeton were sent to fight the fire."

Skrepnek says an Initial Attack Crew of seven members from Penticton were working the fire lines in the early afternoon. They were later joined by a 20 member Unit Crew from Princeton.

It was reported to Castanet a few cabins were evacuated.

"RCMP were helping move a few people out of the area for a short period of time while the retardant lines were being dropped," says Skrepnek.

He says everyone is back in their homes now. There never was an official Evacuation Order and people were only moved for a short period of time.

Skrepnek says crews have the fire guarded and they are now in the "mop-up" stage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, there were no storms reported in the area. Ashnola is close to Keremeos, where temperatures hit 34C Saturday.

Fire danger ratings are listed as high to extreme in the Keremeos fire zone.
