Ground shakes under Princeton

Residents in and around Princeton woke up a little shaken, not stirred,  after a magnitude 3.3 earthquake shook the region Wednesday morning.

According to Natural Resources Canada, the quake hit shortly after 6:30 a.m.

Earthquake Seismologist, Alison Bird, says the quake was felt in Princeton, Tulameen and Chain Lake.

Bird says there was no damage reported.

"There wouldn't be damage for something like this. We wouldn't expect it and we certainly haven't received any reports of damage," says Bird.

"People will feel it fairly mildly but there isn't enough strength to cause damage."

Bird says the quake was fairly shallow and was centred about 15km north of Princeton.

She says the Okanagan/Similkameen region does experience a number of quakes over the course of a year, in fact, the Penticton area will receive about a dozen each year.

Bird adds most of the quakes are relatively minor in nature.

"Mostly you are susceptible to the smaller ones. It's unlikely that you would ever have a larger one but it's not completely impossible."
