Prohibited driver flees and crashes

A Summerland resident with a very, very long driving prohibition is in more trouble with the law.

On April 19, 2011 at 10 p.m. West Kelowna RCMP were requested to assist in apprehending a male driver who had fled in a vehicle from a Summerland RCMP member.

"West Kelowna officers were positioned in Peachland for the suspect believed to be heading north," says West Kelowna RCMP Cst John Brown.

But before the suspect could reach the officers, he crashed.

"The suspect, a 46-year-old Summerland resident, lost control of his vehicle, a 1996 teal Pontiac Sunfire, crossed the oncoming lane, went into the ditch and overturned at a high rate of speed near Altlers Beach," says Brown.

Brown says the driver then fled the scene and was walking down Highway 97, where he was apprehended after a brief struggle with police.

"The vehicle and driver had been the subject of several possible impaired driver complaints in: West Kelowna, on Highway 97 C, Pentiction and Summerland earlier in the day.

"The man was uninjured in the crash, although his vehicle is a complete write off. "

The driver was prohibited from driving at the time, and is held in custody to appear in provincial court on charges of dangerous driving, flight from police, resist arrest criminal code offences and driving while prohibited under the Motor Vehicle Act.

Brown says the man is known to police and has an extensive driving record including a 50 year driving prohibition.
