Free tuition offered to Glenfir students

A private school in Kelowna is opening its doors to students displaced by the sudden closure of Glenfir Preparatory School in Summerland.

Vedanta Academy will provide space for Glenfir students, free of charge, for the balance of the school year.

Glenfir announced Thursday it was closing its doors at the end of the school day Friday.

With schools on hiatus for Spring break, parents of the 76 displaced students have two weeks to make alternate arrangements for the final three months of the school year.

"This was totally unexpected," says Vedanta Academy CEO, Michael Guzzi.

"We've done this before when there were other school issues back in 2002 or 2003."

Guzzi says a few parents have already contacted his school about available space.

"In fact I have a couple of appointments over Spring break. And, this offer is not contingent on the students enrolling past the end of the current school year."

Several students who attended Glenfir reside in Kelowna although the school does draw from the entire valley.

He adds the ideal scenario would be for Glenfir to somehow get back on its feet and re-open in September.

Glenfir school, which has been open since 1993, was forced to close its doors due to economic constraints.

Guzzi says its a reality that has hit several private schools, so harder than others.
