Toxic chemicals in Mill Creek: Update

Update: 3:00 p.m. - -Police have shut down the Lake Avenue beach access as the chemicals in Mill Creek have reached Lake Okanagan.

Emergency crews are on the scene of a hazardous materials spill in Mill Creek, near Lindahl Street in Kelowna.

The spill was reported at 7:30 a.m. Sunday and is in connection with Saturday's fire at the Stewart Centre on Kirschner Road.

At the present time, an analysis is being done to determine the makeup of the materials involved in the spill.

No evacuation alerts or orders are in place at the present time.

Residents with properties backing onto Mill Creek between Lindahl Street and downstream to Okanagan Lake are being advised by a door to door distribution letter of the situation.

Only they are believed to be affected by this incident.

Everyone else in the community remains completely safe.

Residents and member of the public are urged to stay away from the creek area so that emergency crews can conduct their work.

As well, please keep pets away from Mill Creek from the Lindahl Street area to Okanagan Lake.

The Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) has been activated to support crews working on the scene.

An evaluation of the situation is underway and specific details will be released as they are confirmed.

The first concern is for public safety and the safety of emergency first response personnel.

The EOC is working with other response agencies to manage the situation and minimize the impact on our community as a whole.

New information will be released as soon as it becomes available.

Ongoing public information about the situation will be posted on the City of Kelowna web site and information lines have been established at (250)469-8490.

The EOC request that the public:
· Avoid the Mill Creek area so emergency responders can effectively perform their duties
· Stay tuned to the media or call the above public information number for further information
· DO NOT CALL 911 unless it's a life threatening emergency
· Remain calm.
