Sun look for better effort

Daylon Pommier didn't pull any punches after the Okanagan Sun 24-10 season opening win in Kamloops Saturday.

"If we come out and play like this I don't think we're going to have a chance," said Pommier referring to Saturday night's home opener against the Big Kahuna Rams.

The Sun turned the ball over four times and were flagged for 20 penalties in last Saturday's win in Kamloops.

Pommier says if that doesn't change, it could be a long night against the Rams.

"Yes, they beat us in our home last year and they are going to be a very good team again this year."

Sun head coach Pete McCall agree with Pommier's assertion.

"It's the truth, you can't play sloppy like that and expect to beat the good team. We know that," says McCall.

"That's been our battle cry this week to clean it up and put in a better performance."

McCall, ever the optimist, admits things weren't as bad Saturday once he had a chance to go over the game film.

While he didn't like the number of penalties the team took, he says the biggest problem was the timing of those which killed several drives and negated a 60-yard touchdown from Dan Turek.

The Sun split the quarterbacking chores in the opener. Bobby Davis, who won the job out of camp started while back-up Taylor Potkins took over to start the second half.

McCall says Davis will start against the Rams but indicated he would let the flow of the game dictate when, or if, Potkins gets into the game.

"I think we'll just see how it goes with Bobby. He have two good quarterbacks and that's a good thing. If Bobby's making things happen we'll keep playing him but it's good to know we have a plan 'B' if things get a little stagnant."

Davis completed 9 of 15 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown in one half of work against the Broncos while Potkins was 4 of 8 for 77 yards and two majors.

Saturday's home opener kicks off at 7 p.m. at the Apple Bowl.
