Motorcyclist in hospital after hitting truck

Police believe speed was likely a factor in a crash which sent a motorcyclist to Kelowna General Hospital Thursday afternoon.

The rider struck the side of a pick-up truck while he was heading along Dayton Street shortly after 5 p.m.

The unidentified man was wearing a t-shirt and shorts. He was wearing a helmet.

He told onlookers after the crash he was on his way to meet his mother at the beach.

He told witnesses he normally wore full riding gear but didn't on this occasion because the weather was so nice.

The man was taken to hospital with road rash and other undetermined injuries.

"It appears as if the motorcyclist was heading northbound here and the pick-up exited from a driveway to turn south," says Cpl. Mike McVicar at the scene.

"The driver wasn't able to clearly see the motorcycle coming and the impact occurred. Indications are the motorcycle may have been travelling in excess of the speed limit up here according to a couple of witnesses."

The crash happened just past a turn in the road which hampered visibility from the driveway.

"The view from here is restricted because of the shrubbery and the curve in the road, but if any vehicle is travelling at the posted speed limit, the driver would likely have enough time to see the vehicle coming."

McVicar says any vehicle coming at a higher rate of speed would get to the driveway quicker, something he says likely happened in this occasion.

He says this crash underlines the need for motorcyclists to wear the proper protective gear and to be aware of their speed and their surroundings.

Emergency officials say the man had a number of 'raspberries' on his knees, elbows and shoulders as a result of the clothing he was wearing.
