A Trail resident's healthy skepticism saved them thousands of dollars after almost getting caught up in a rental scam.
RCMP officers received a report about a fraud attempt from a hopeful renter in Trail on April 11.
The renter reached out to the landlord, who requested they send $2,100 for the first month's rent and a $1,050 damage deposit.
Following the recent online media stories about local rental frauds, the person was rightfully suspicious and contacted a local realtor who informed the person that the house was not listed for rent and had recently been sold.
Luckily, the person did not lose any money in the attempted scam.
“Please take the time to do your due diligence as this person did. It may save you a lot of money by spending a little time verifying the details," said Trail RCMP Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.
