Penticton

Playground to honour fallen soldier

In grateful memory of Captain Jonathan Snyder, a Penticton soldier who lost his life whilst serving in Afghanistan, and in an attempt, in his name, to bring joy to local children, Penticton Christian School is raising money to erect a bright, cheerful and fun playground structure.

Captain Snyder, a strong, ethical and selfless graduate of Penticton Secondary School, lived his life for others.

He had a set of values for life, and, as a role model to his peers, he encouraged others to be kind, try new things, be fearless and be good people.

He was a natural sportsman and invested of himself heavily in team activities such as Rugby and basketball.

Captain Snyder was an active member of the Army Cadets and later, in the service of freedom and of his country, joined the 1st Battalion of the Princess Patricia’s Light Infantry.

Sadly, on the night of June 7th, 2008, Captain Snyder, whilst on active duty in Afghanistan, fell into a deep, unmarked well and lost his life.

Captain Snyder gave the ultimate sacrifice that a soldier is called upon to make his very life. This playground will serve as a memorial to his courage and his love for others.

The pleasure, activity and health benefits that it will bring to young people will help to foster two of Captain Snyder’s tenets good citizenship and team fellowship.

The playground will be sited adjacent to the KVR trail where it passes the school grounds and will be available to the whole community when the school is not in session.

Heavily supported by “Let Them Be Kids”, a national charity dedicated to improving local communities through play equipment, and with donations from local businesses, organizations and individuals, the school will erect the structure on 5th June 2010.

The intent of this project is simple:
  • To bring joy to kids inside and outside the school.
  • To complete a project that will see all community partners working together for the greater good of the community.
  • To raise leaders from our youth.
  • To demonstrate, through working together, the joy and strength in wholesome community spirit.
  • To encourage a healthy lifestyle that includes outdoor physical activity.
The children at the school are asking that you partner with them by visiting the website at www.penticton.ltbk.ca and considering how you are able to help.
