Kelowna City Council will be asked to amend a municipal bylaw to allow plaques to be erected in Stuart Park.
The plaques would honour those people recognized at the city's annual Civic Awards ceremony.
The current bylaw which restricts the types of commemorative plaques permitted in city parks and the reasons for allowing them would preclude the plaques from being placed in Stuart Park.
Parks a Public Space Projects Manager, Andrew Gibbs, suggests an exemption be made to allow for the community award plaques to be placed in the park.
"The design for Stuart Park provides opportunity for plaques to be installed in the park that recognize the recipients of the community's civic awards," says Gibbs in his report for council.
"The intent is to annually recognize, in a prominent and appropriate manner, those values that the community holds dear and those people whom the community acknowledges as exemplifying those values."
Gibbs says the award plaques would be located in the civic square area of the park, directly across the street from City Hall.
"These plaques will rotate annually with each new group of award recipients, and the previous year's recipients will get to keep their plaque when the plaques for the following year's awards are installed."
He anticipates the yearly cost at about $1,000.
The 2010 Civic Awards ceremony will be held April 14 at the Delta Grand.
