Penticton Search and Rescue was called to assist the fire department in rescuing a man from a ravine late Sunday night.

Penticton Fire Chief, Wayne Williams, says a vehicle went over an embankment on Salikin Drive near Carmine just after 8 p.m.

“At first, it didn't look like anyone was in the vehicle, but after further searching, we found that the driver had been ejected from the vehicle and was in a nearby ravine,” says Williams.

He says Penticton SAR was called to help get the man up the hill and into a waiting ambulance.

Sergeant Rick Dellebuur says the 53-year-old driver is a Penticton resident.

“He was driving a 1999 Chev Blazer and it became stuck in the ditch as a result of making a U-turn on Saliken Drive. While trying to get the vehicle out of the ditch, the vehicle suddenly got traction and went across the road and over the edge down a steep embankment,” says Dellebuur.

He says the driver was taken to Penticton Regional Hospital and remains in critical condition.
