Residents on the westside of Okanagan Lake are receiving notice in the mail from Canada Post this week, explaining that Council’s requested change has been met.
Effective January 11, 2010, Canada Post has updated their systems to honor Council’s request to have “West Kelowna” as the official name for the municipality, with “Westbank” as a valid alternate address for the V4T postal code within the District boundaries.
The change does not impact residents on Westbank First Nations land. The postal addresses remain the same for First Nations Reserve #9 (Westbank – V4T) or First Nations Reserve #10 (Kelowna – V1Z).
West Kelowna residents are advised that addresses should be changed on Driver’s Licences. This is a free service through ICBC and can be accomplished:
ICBC Driver Services & Claim Centre
1720 Springfield Rd.
Addresses should also be changed on Vehicle Insurance which will require a visit to your insurer as new papers will need to be prepared.
Local RCMP are aware of the special circumstances regarding the municipality’s name change and do not anticipate any enforcement activities to do with place names on Driver’s Licences.
Passport Canada advises that addresses can be changed in writing on the passport, by striking one line through the old address (hand written on page 4 of Passport) and writing the new address beside.
If there is not room, a sticky note with the new address can be adhered to the passport. Be sure to initial the change. Do not use liquid paper or try to erase the old information – this could make your Passport invalid.
