The Penticton Fire Department doesn't want to see anyone on Christmas. Which is why they are sending out a list of tips on how to prevent holiday-related fires.

Liz Wilson, operations assistant for the PFD, says most Christmas fires can be prevented.

“Real trees are thirsty, your Christmas tree will drink up to a litre of water a day, so be sure you're keeping it well watered,” says Wilson.

She says the location of your Christmas tree is very important.

“Keep your tree away from heat sources such as heating vents, fireplaces or radiators.”

Wilson says LED lights should be used on trees as they produce less heat and use less energy.

“Always turn off your Christmas lights before leaving home or going to sleep.”

She says although they may not be on the top of a child's wish list, smoke alarms make great gifts.
