The District of West Kelowna is busy finalizing details for a community celebration at Royal LePage Place on Monday, January 25, 2010, when the Olympic Torch Relay passes through the municipality in the late afternoon.

Schools from throughout the municipality have been asked to create special artwork for the event and there will be musical performances by school choirs and bands during the event, which will start at 6 p.m.

The one hour event will be followed by a free Family Skate in Jim Lind Arena from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

“We are very pleased to be able to celebrate the enormous endeavour of the Torch Relay and we are hoping all confirmed Torchbearers will call our office, so we can officially invite them to participate in our event as part of a Parade of Champions,” says Mayor Doug Findlater.

Torchbearers who have been confirmed to carry the torch in West Kelowna are invited to contact the administrative office at (778) 797-2210 for further information.

To support the “Light the Way” theme, everyone in the community is being encouraged to bring a flashlight or glow stick and cheer on the Olympic flame as it travels through West Kelowna.

Details of the exact torch route or Torchbearers will not be finalized by VANOC until a few days prior, so residents should check the District’s Torch Relay web page for updates in January.

The Olympic Torch relay will pass through West Kelowna on its way to Kelowna, where a three hour celebration has been planned for City Park from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.

The torch will spend the night in Kelowna before embarking for the North Okanagan the following morning.
