Browning 'elfing' up for SOEC skate

Kurt Browning will be looking for an elf suit before he comes to the Okanagan.

The four-time world champion figure skater is one of many big name skaters who will be coming to Penticton next month for the annual Holiday Festival on Ice.

Browning joins 2009 World Champion Jeffrey Buttle, Winter Olympic medalist Marie-France Dubreuil, Olympic gold medalists Jamie Sale and David Pelletier, among others, at the South Okanagan Events Centre on December 5 for a night of holiday fun.

“It's always a fun event. Christmas, winter and skating just seem to go together,” says Browning.

He says this year one of the solo skates he will be doing will be to the classic song 'Hallelujah,' as sung by the Canadian Tenors.

“I'm used to bouncing around on the ice, used to being silly. I have to remember how to 'skate pretty' for this song. But I'm also looking to buy an elf costume for other parts of the show.”

Browning says although they start preparing for the tour several months in advance, the skaters don't get much time to rehearse together.

“There are several group numbers, but we don't all get together to practice until just a few days before the tour starts. Luckily, we are all professionals who have worked together before. It's a great, fun show to be a part of. It's, well...jollier than other skating events.”

Tickets for Holiday Festival on Ice are available through the Valley First Tix website, the SOEC box office, the Penticton and Wine Country Visitors Centre or by phone at 1-877-763-2849.
