Daniel: Grateful for the Food Bank

by Contributed - Story: 51042
Nov 25, 2009 / 4:30 am

Daniel moved to Kelowna with his family about four years ago. He lived in Penticton and moved to Kelowna with his mom and younger brother. Daniel began working shortly after they moved to Kelowna and recently moved out on his own. He has been employed with the same company for the last four years.

Daniel faced some challenges when the work began to slow down and so began to look for odd jobs to fill the gap. The slowdowns have usually come without warning and normally Daniel was able to pick up odd jobs to make ends meet. Daniel, now 20, has come across some challenges. He works a job pouring concrete as well as other odd jobs when things slow down. This year his additional jobs have not come through so he has struggled to make ends meet. This has meant Daniel turns to the Food Bank when he doesn’t have enough money to buy groceries.

When things slow down the odd jobs were harder to come by. Daniel took as much work as he could but it didn’t work out as it had in the past. Daniel continues to look for work and takes the jobs when he can get them if his regular work slows down. Sometimes it is just playing catch up when things happen so quickly and without warning.

Daniel appreciates the support of the community and the Food Bank and although he doesn’t have to go all the time, he still appreciates being able to get additional food. He is amazed that they are able to focus on nutritional food as well so he can continue to have food on his table.

He has noticed this year it is harder to make ends meet and to wants to say to donors that he really appreciates their support.

    About the Food Bank

The Kelowna Community Food Bank is a self-supporting non-profit organization, raising food and funds through donations, special events, community food drives and local and national sponsors. The Food Bank is operated by a volunteer board of directors, 8 staff members and more than 100 volunteers who contribute over 20,000 hours annually, providing essential services including food collection, distribution and sorting, hamper preparation, client assistance and referrals, and special event planning and fundraising.

The Kelowna Community Food Bank was established in 1983 to provide short-term support to Kelowna families and individuals in need of temporary assistance. Since then the mission has grown to help alleviate chronic hunger and poverty in the Central Okanagan by providing our clients with a 5 to 7 day supply of healthy food on a monthly basis. Annually, we serve more than 30,000 persons including nearly 10,000 children, distributing over $2 million in food.

The Kelowna Food Bank is a member of The BC Association of Food Banks and the Canadian Association of Food Banks (CAFB).
