A local radio station and a very generous contest winner want to put food on the table for those needing some extra help in our community.
A trip recently given away during a Silk FM’s contest was donated back from the winner to be auctioned off on air to benefit the Kelowna Food Bank.
KFB Executive Director, Vonnie Lavers, says the food bank’s shelves are emptier than that have been in seven years.
“We are very concerned coming into the busy fall and winter months about our ability to meet demand on our services. The food bank has seen increased usage because of lay offs and job losses that have driven more families and children in need to our door. We need all of the community support we can get right now to fill up our empty shelves,” says Lavers.
She says on Tuesday, September 8, bids will be taken during the morning show from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
“Listeners can call in with a bid on the trip which is worth $3,500. The trip is an all inclusive trip for two to the four-star Holiday Inn in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, including round trip airfare. I couldn’t say enough about the goodness of the winner of this contest and his generous donation to us. It is these kinds of caring individuals who in turn help us care for our community that keeps us going every day in doing our work.”
“Everybody’s in trouble these days and if we can throw some extra money at them, I’m sure they would appreciate it,” says contest winner Dennis Hostland.
So far this year the Food Bank has provided hungry children and families with nearly $2 million in food and household products.
