A Central Okanagan man was caught driving drunk after speeding past a police officer.

The 28-year-old man was caught just after 3 a.m. Saturday on Highway 97.

Constable Steve Holmes says the man was going 54 km/h faster than the posted speed limit when he passed the officer.

“The officer turned around and caught up with the speeder, who had just gone through a red light. After pulling the vehicle over, the officer detected signs of alcohol impairment on the driver, and placed him under investigation for driving while impaired,” says Holmes.

He says the driver provided breath samples that were in excess of the legal limit of .08.

“The West Kelowna resident will be facing recommended charges of driving while impaired and over .08. He makes his first court appearance in early June.”
