RCMP shooting incident update

Kelowna RCMP have confirmed the man injured during an incident with police was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant.

Mark Aaron Pauls, a 24-year-old Kelowna resident, was injured Friday night and remains recovering in hospital, in police custody.

The incident took place just before 6 p.m. outside of a residence in the 800 block of Thompson Road.

An on-duty plainclothes RCMP officer saw a man he believed was the subject of a Canada-wide warrant.

The officer identified himself as police. A brief struggle took place, during which time the officer was sprayed with an irritant and several shots were fired.

Sergeant Ann Brinnen says the investigation is still in its early stages with police still processing the scene and interviewing witnesses.

“Police can confirm that the man injured in the shooting was wanted on a Canada Wide Arrest Warrant for breach of a Corrections Canada and Conditional Release Act. As the investigation is expected to be quite lengthy and complex, more information will be released as it arises,” says Brinnen.

She says the police officer involved is distraught over the incident but was not physically injured.
