A wonderful opportunity for young musicians is taking place in Kelowna.
The chance is to perform as a soloist during the annual Kelowna Pops Canada Day Spectacular Concert at Prospera Place on July 1.
The annual Pops concert is presented by the Kelowna Canada Day Concerts Society and this year they have added the Young Artist Competition to give some local youth the chance to play with the full Pops orchestra.
Event coordinator, Barbara Shave, says the Kelowna Pops is a 100-piece orchestra comprised of advanced music students, volunteer adults and professional musicians.
“These musicians rehearse on June 30 and during the day on July 1 for the Canada Day evening concert. The Young Artist Competition is open to all instrumentalists and vocalists who have received formal musical training,” says Shave.
She says winners will be chosen from two categories: category A: competitors under age 14 and category B: competitors under age 21.
“Those wishing to take advantage of this opportunity must complete and submit an entry form by February 18, along with an audition tape or CD of their performance of a classical or POP selection not exceeding 15 minutes duration and a non-refundable $10 administrative fee.“
Shave says those who qualify for the next level, based upon the quality of their recorded program, will then be asked to audition in person on March 14 or 15.
She says due to costs associated with securing a grand piano for the performance, they are unable to accept piano applicants.
Winners of both categories will be notified by March 16.
