Bankhead joins world record attempt

Students at Bankhead Elementary School are hoping to become part of a second Guinness World Record.

Students at the school joined other kids across Canada Friday attempting to establish a record for 'Most Children Reading With An Adult.'

The current record, 78,791 was established three years ago in the United States.

Back in 2005, students at Bankhead joined other students in Kelowna in simultaneously planting 134,083 trees to commemorate Kelowna's 100th birthday.

This latest attempt is in celebration of Family Literacy Week.

Local celebrities are reading Robert Munsch stories to the children taking part in the event.

Bankhead Principal, Dennis Tetreau, says the students were excited to take part in Friday's event.

"They are excited aren't they? The readers are doing a fabulous job," says Tetreau.

"I was just walking around and I get caught up in the enthusiasm just listening to them."

Tetreau says it was easy for him to make the decision to participate when the idea was presented.

"When it was brought to me, we thought wow, what a great opportunity for our kids to be part of something special. Our school really promotes reading at every level anyway, so this was a no-brainer for us to get involved."

Reading events will continue through Saturday morning as well.
