Getting Fido licensed will be cheaper if you get it done before the of February.
Notices are going out to pet owners in the Central Okanagan reminding them that it’s time to renew their dog’s tags.
Communications Coordinator for the Regional District of the Central Okanagan, Bruce Smith, says a late charge of $5 will be applied to renewals received after February 28.
“The tag for a dog that has been spayed or neutered will cost $16, while a dog license for those that have not costs $50,” says Smith.
He says all responsible dog owners should understand that a license is required under the Regional District Dog Control Bylaw.
“Unfortunately, almost three quarters of the dogs that we see at the pound each year don’t have licenses. That makes it difficult for our staff to contact the dog owner. If your dog isn’t licensed and is impounded, you will be subject to an additional $50 fee, on top of the regular impound and licensing fees.”
Smith says dog owners should keep in mind that the bylaw only requires the RDCO to hold a dog at the pound for up to 72 hours.
“So if your dog is missing, we encourage them to contact dog control as quickly as possible to facilitate a happy reunion. Having a dog tag attached to your pet’s collar can help with easy identification if the dog gets away and is found.”
Dog licenses may be purchased in person at any of the following outlets: Kelowna City Hall, the District of Lake Country and District of Peachland municipal offices, the Regional District of Central Okanagan KLO Road office and dozens of licensing agents at pet stores and veterinary clinics throughout the Central Okanagan.
This year when pet owners purchase or renew their pets’ license, they’ll also receive some dog related information, such as a pamphlet which lists area dog parks, offers some pet-friendly reminders and important contact phone numbers.
