Pool misconceptions

To the editor:
RE: Concerns about new pool

The City of Kelowna wishes to dispel any misconceptions that could arise from Grant Spannier’s November 30 letter “Concerns about the new pool.”

The new aquatic centre under construction at Mission Recreation Park is 52 metres in length. The extra two metres accommodates movable bulkheads to maximize use of the pool.

The new 50 metre pool meets the required regulations for provincial sanctioned swimming and diving competitions. The pool was never intended or promoted to host international swimming and diving competitions but can accommodate athletes training at that level. However, the pool will be able to support a number of other international aquatic events including synchronized swimming and water polo.

The City anticipates the majority of users will be recreational in nature. However, the 50 metre pool will definitely be attractive for athletes of all levels and abilities for training purposes.

The seating capacity for the aquatic centre is 400 and can be increased with the addition of portable bleachers. This capacity is in compliance for provincial swimming and diving competitions.

For additional information visit (www.missionrecreationpark.ca).

Thank you,

David Graham
Director of Strategic Initiatives
