It's about power: Ron Cannan

Kelowna-Lake Country Conservative MP, Ron Cannan, says the coalition government is about power.

The Liberals, Bloc and NDP are on the verge of forming a coalition government and booting the Conservatives from power.

Cannan says that's exactly what Canadians are witnessing -- a power struggle.

"We got elected just about six weeks ago to govern this country and we found out now that there are some people working behind the scenes from the opposition, specifically led from the NDP and Liberals to form a coalition with the Bloc to take over with a non-confidence vote on Monday."

The coalition argues that Canadians have lost confidence in the Harper government because it refuses to come up with a bailout package for Canada's industries -- much like the U.S. government has done. Cannan says the Conservatives are not in the business of writing blank cheques.

"We’re not going to just rush out and throw a bunch of money. We’re trying to ensure we cut back on spending."

The Conservatives intended on delivering a new fiscal restraint budget in January, but the coalition government says it can't wait that long. Cannan says there's more to the story than money.

"It’s not about the economy for the opposition, it’s about power."

Liberal Diana Cabott, Cannan's political adversary in the last federal election, says Harper was the master of his own destiny.

"I think it’s a case of what goes around comes around. Mr. Harper won strength in minority but he failed to recognize that he still had a minority government and that takes some consensus building with the rest of the MPs to try and work together to meet the needs of Canadians."

Cabott says some in the political world see Harper as a bully.

"He definitely sounded as though he was mean-spirited and it backfired on him. He’s just at times been downright obnoxious."

Cabott says Liberal leader Stephane Dion will make a strong coalition leader.

"I’ve heard Mr. Dion referred to as a lame duck, and you know, this duck can fly."

The Harper government could fall by next Monday.
