A 22-year-old Vernon man has died in VJH after being struck down by a vehicle shortly after noon in the downtown core.

The incident occurred on 32nd Street between 29th and 30th avenues.

RCMP spokesman, Gord Molendyk, says early reports indicate two men were crossing 32nd Street at the alley behind the Bank of Montreal.

"They had crossed two lanes of traffic and were in the southbound lanes when one of the men was struck by a Ford van. Early indications are that speed and alcohol are not contributing factors with the driver of the van involved in the crash," says Molendyk.

"The 22-year-old man from Vernon was first taken to Vernon Jubilee Hospital and then transferred to Vancouver General, where he passed away as a result of his injuries."

Molendyk says the second man crossing the street was not hit.
