Rutland gas station operator fuming

After 13 years of serving customers, Claude Huber finds himself on the outside looking in.

Huber, 51, used to operate the Husky gas station on Highway 33 at Dougall Road in Rutland -- that is until this week when he received a bill from Autogas which recently took over 100 per cent of the lease.

"We were an Autogas Husky for 13 years. Autogas carries the head lease on the property and they opted not to resign with Husky because of the cost of the commercial cards and to put up their own signs. So they went ahead and changed their signage and put some rocks around their landscaping and sent me the bill. They gave me 15 days to pay it otherwise they’re going to roust me out."

Huber says the bill for the signage was more than $10,000.

He says Autogas sent him another bill and accused him of ripping off the Vancouver based company.

"Then they sent me another bill for $26,000 that they said I was short changing them on fuels. Right now we have Nelson and Associates going through all our records. That will be complete by the end of next week to prove that we did not short change them a penny on fuels."

Huber says Autogas refuses to provide detailed information regarding the alleged shortchanging at the pumps.

He figures that Autogas has an agenda and that is to get rid of Huber.

"It’s left me feeling really pissed off. The owner of the company, who has recently passed away, Bob Good, he was 110 per cent a business man, we did a lot of dealings together and he was really good to work with. Now the kids are running the business and they are just out for a vengeance."

Huber says loyal customers have backed him up including some lawyers who've offered to take on the case at no charge.

"My phone’s been ringing off the hook from people saying they know how hard we work, we’ve had many different people work for us, doing bookkeeping and whatnot, and they know everything is straight up. What Autogas is trying to put forward here is 110% bullshit."

Calls to Autogas were not returned.

Update: Autogas has since returned our call and issued a statement.
