A Monday morning fire in Westside has been ruled accidental.

The fire, at Bayview Estates in the 2400 block of Old Okanagan Highway, was reported about 5:30 a.m.

Westside Assistant Fire Chief, Kerry Klonteig, says the investigation ruled the fire accidental.

"The source of ignition was related to smoking materials," says Klonteig.

At the time of the fire, Klonteig indicated the fire appeared to have started in a small storage room attached to the carport and then extended into the ceiling.

"The crews were able to get a quick knockdown before the flames extended into the living quarters of the residence. The homeowners, a mother and her son, were alerted to the blaze by neighbours and able to escape uninjured.”

The residents are now in the care of Emergency Social Services. The homeowner was insured.
