To the editor:
I just want to comment on the voting of a name for Westbank. I think that it was very unfair. Not everyone on the west side of the bridge got to vote on the name. I think that everyone that lives on the west side of the bridge should have a right to vote on the name. I mean the Westbank First Nations should be allowed to vote as well as the non-First Nations that live on the reservation.
The people living on the west side wanted to become a municipality and have their own mayor and council. However, not in my wildest dreams and probably not in most of other's did I ever think that the name would become an issue. Why is the name being changed in the first place? It has been Westbank since way before my time. All this is causing is a lot of expense and heartache for a lot of us that were born and raised here. Why does any of this have to change? I don't think the natives want to be called West Kelowna First Nations. Like how does that all come to light? I bet i know one thought about the First Nations in all this mess. How can they be called the Westbank First Nations when there is no such place anymore?
I think we should have just left well enough alone. Let Lakeview Heights or whoever else, be called West Kelowna if that's what they still want to be called. Let Westbank stay Westbank. We can still pay our taxes to Westside District or whoever. Like Summerland is Summerland but they pay their taxes to the District of Osoyoos. So why can't we just leave it the way it was?
Thank you,
Carolyn (Popp) Schindel
