Rumours and things

We have just finished our first full season with TSN as the broadcaster for the CFL games and the they have done a good job of presenting the coverage and covering the game in the broadcast booth. They have a good line up of broadcasters. A lot of analysts tell you what's happening. The good ones tell you why. TSN has the good ones. The camera work was on par with anything you'll see south of the border, though it's a mystery why TSN thinks it's a good idea to stick a camera in a player's face while he shouts something unintelligible to the viewers at home. One of the best features of TSN's coverage is the sound, which transmits the ferocity of hits right into your living room. In the Saskatchewan-BC playoff game, the power of the crowd came through loud and clear. Loud for sure...

The Ramponi family is selling their business. The fruit and vegetable store has been a landmark on Gordon Road since 1980 as they bought this part of the farm in 1968. The farm, shop and the store are up for sale. I believe it has 1447 cherry trees with some of the best we ate late in the season. Their great-grandfather started farming in that area in 1893...

Breakfast of Champions—celebrating sustainability successes. This year's breakfast will be on Tuesday, November 25th at the Habitat on 248 Leon Avenue, across from the Gospel Mission. It will begin at 7 a.m. Joanne de Vries, the lady in charge has quite a line up of presenters. Tickets are $35 plus GST. Call Joanne at 250-766-1777...

I don’t know whether you have looked up at the 17-storey building built on the lot just SW of the Superstore? There is a magnificent penthouse on the top floor of the building. It has to be seen to be appreciated. The views are overwhelming from each side of the building. The living area, well-stocked kitchen with the gadgets, wine cooler room and bedrooms designed for that getaway from the world time. There must be a dozen big screen TV’s and four balcony’s with one where you can cook out. It is huge. Well my friends it is for sale. Sit down a moment. Are you ready? $6.5 million. Yes, I have that correct...

Rod and Judy Hazard, hoteliers from the Prairies, came to the area a few years ago and their first project was to be a Comfort Inn Suites 88-room project on Highway 97 N. in the city where you see the construction. There Braemar Group is currently planning the opening of the their Best Western Wine Country hotel. The 99-room hotel is in Vintage View next to the golf course. The company owns a 100-room Comfort Inn & Suites in Medicine Hat and an 88-room Super 8 in Swift Current. The company built a Super 8 in Medicine Hat and Comfort & Suites in Yorkton and has sold both of them.

When I first started to write about the hotel in Kelowna, it seems like that was years ago, they kind of stopped to build a condo development in Peachland called Lakeshore Gardens. Braemar has property on Highway 97 just south of Leathead Road for another hotel and probably retail complex and land in Airdrie just outside Calgary as a future hotel property...

Karl and Julie Kuipers are celebrating twelve years in the business with their Jakx Neighborhood Grill in the Mission at KLO and the Lakeshore. I can remember when they were just getting started back twelve years ago at the corner of KLO and Gordon Drive. It was their first restaurant and it wasn’t easy making that property work because the parking was atrocious. The trade from the College wasn’t huge so they had to work at selling themselves and producing a product the customers wanted. The rest is a huge success story for this privately owned award winning eating spot. They know their customers and that has paid off with a strong clientele that makes it their spot for lunch and dinners...

Costco is having a special day for the +55 crowd who frequent the Kelowna store. That is my age group and a fun place to shop all the time. The only procedure is that non-members are given a viewing pass. They can’t shop unless they do take out a membership. Check in and they’ll explain everything. If you are not shopping you can still take part in the gifts and prizes that will be awarded.

Victoria has been rated as the greenest city to get around in Canada. Next comes Vancouver, Ottawa and Toronto in the second annual national ranking of environmentally friendly transportation. But here is the surprising one, Kelowna moves from fourteen to tenth due in large part to the fact that all our transit bus fleet uses alternative fuel...

It is estimated that for every one cent drop in the loonie, the NHL league revenues drop $8 to $9 million dollars.
