Veteran councillor, Janice Perrino is the new mayor of Summerland.

Perrino defeated fellow councillor, Peter Waterman by more than 500 votes.

She garnered a total of 2,183 votes, compared to 1,651 for Waterman.

Perrino replaces David Gregory, who stepped down after just one term as mayor of Summerland.

"I'm looking forward to my turn as mayor. I think having two turns as a councillor really prepared me for this challenge. We know where we are going, it's a good council," says Perrino.

She says in addition to the problems surrounding the Water Treatment Plant, she plans to put together a community survey.

Only two of the four incumbents running for re-election were returned.

Bruce Hallquist topped the polls with 1,991 votes while Ken Roberge picked up 1,827.

Also gaining seats on Summerland Council, Lloyd Christopherson (1,882), Gordon Clark (1,862), Jim Kyluik (1,852) and Sam Elia (1,939).

Incumbents David Finnis and Lorraine Bennest went down to defeat.

Connie Denesiuk and Linda Van Alphen were elected to the Board of Education.
